Priya Nair to Lead HUL as First Woman CEO; Market Gives Instant Approval

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), India’s largest fast-moving consumer goods company by market value, has named Priya Nair as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1. With this appointment, Nair becomes the first woman to lead the ₹6.2 trillion company in its 92-year history.

Nair will succeed Rohit Jawa, who completes his two-year tenure at a time when HUL is recalibrating its growth strategy amidst shifting consumption trends and intensifying competition in the FMCG space.

Reacting to the announcement, HUL’s stock rose over 4% on the Bombay Stock Exchange, adding nearly ₹25,000 crore to its market capitalisation in a single day. 

Currently serving as the Global President of Unilever’s Beauty & Wellbeing division, a €13 billion business with a footprint in over 20 countries, Nair brings nearly three decades of experience in brand building and market leadership. 

HUL Chairman Nitin Paranjpe said, “I am certain that with her deep understanding of the Indian market and excellent track record, Priya will take HUL to the next level of performance.”

As she takes the helm of a company, all eyes will be on how Nair balances legacy with innovation and whether she can chart a growth path in a market where brand loyalty is being constantly tested by D2C insurgents and shifting consumer behaviour.
